INTRODUTION

The Institute of Globalization and Multicultural Studies seeks to promote better relations and mutual understanding among people in the globalizing world, and those from diverse nations and cultures in an increasingly multicultural South Korea. It does so through cooperative studies, multidisciplinary research, and the facilitation of dialogue amongst relevant actors. Established by Hanyang University in 2009, the institute serves as a resource for information and analysis on critical issues of transnational and multicultural phenomenon in South Korea such as human rights, migration, cultural adjustment and ethnicity. It brings people together to exchange views, develop expertise and develop policy options. This institute is an independent and nonprofit organization which operates with funding from government, private agencies, individuals, foundations and corporations.

The Institute of Globalization and Multicultural Studies is located in Hanyang University at Ansan, a place eminently suited to conduct research on migration and multicultural phenomenon in South Korea. This is due to the fact that over one of the largest migrant communities migrants in South Korea have resided in Ansan city. Ansan city is known colloquially as “a borderless village” or “home town” for migrants in Korea.
